When we moved into this house 10 years ago it was empty and spotless and everything was clean and white even though there was nothing personal on the walls yet, it was clean and had the beautiful echo of a fresh start. Now it seems like the walls are about to burst with stuff and my life has become an unorganized mess of kids toys and clutter. It’s a blessing, don’t get me wrong! But holy hannah montanna, let’s get this stuff under control!
I’m busy though and I really would rather throw it in a closet and forget about it. So, Angie, if you want this done but you’re too busy, does that mean it’s not really near the top of your priorities? And why not?
It’s just too out of control and it’s intimidating, that’s all. Little by little in between “I’m hungry” and “I have to pee” and “I’m bored” (and then there’s the kid’s complaints as well lol) As I was going through a bunch of my old papers of stories and poems and all sorts of writing today I came across many fond memories. One of the hundreds of old poems shoved in amongst random papers was the one that follows:
Life is a journey of sweetness and sorrow, Of yesterday's memories and hopes for tomorrow, Of pathways we choose and detours we face With patience and humor, courage and grace, Of joys that we've shared and of people we've met Who have touched us in ways we will never forget.
I thought it was strange how it showed itself today of all days when I’ve been thinking of those special friendships lost and hard lessons learned. Seems that I was meant to do this so I could find encouragement in my past struggles and losses.
I hope everyone has had a great week so far. The weekend is near!

I feel your pain as I don’t feel motivated to attack the clutter in my flat. I used to give everything away to family and friends but with little appreciation so I’m not doing again.
But I can’t be bothered to sell it on ebay or the likes. Any suggestions?
Love your poem. Caz x

The biggest clutter in my home for about 6 years was kids stuff. I kept so much just in case someone I knew came over and didn’t have anything extra, or in case I new someone who was in need suddenly, or for family members. Like you, I found there was little appreciation. I just started donating everything. I give away as much as possible through facebook and whatever doesn’t go I have no choice but to toss. Some places have second hand stores that take things like dishes, linens, toys and such. I have no options like that here 😦 There are women’s shelters that are always in need of donations, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, things like that if you’re not looking to make money from your items. If you have these in your area, just call them up and ask what kinds of things they could make the most use of. They will really appreciate it!!

That’s a better idea, I’d give it away rather than give it to unappreciative people again 🙂

We sometimes say that children have short attention spans, but if you want to see a real short attention span, just mention decluttering. It is something we all need to do in our homes and our lives and yet there is always something better to do. Great poem by the way. It is amazing what we find when we clear the clutter. Cheers Angie. Lol! Yes you can start a stampede by mentioning the word “declutter”. It seems that the stuff just piles up so quick, especially if you have a busy household. Thanks Allan!

I have to say, I’ve never heard the phrase, “holy hanna montanna” before. That made me chuckle. 😀

Lol! I also use a lot of “Mighty monkey balls!” and “Holy flip flops!” I can swear like a sailor’s daughter and kids love to repeat so while decluttering the stuff, my language is also getting cleaned up lol. I’ve recently heard “holy shittake mushrooms” as well and I like that one as well 😀

For the last couple of years I’ve been meaning to declutter and end up getting distracted by something else. Hopefully this year I’ll finally do it!

I find it not as intimidating if you break it down into small bites. If you’re wanting to do the kitchen first, start with one or two drawers 🙂 Another easy suggestion is to pick 1 item per day to purge, or in the beginning if you have tons of stuff, aim for 3-5 items a day. Set your goals high but attainable. You can totally do it! Don’t think of it as something you have to finish because it’s actually something that will never be done, it’s an ongoing task like the dishes LOL I wish you luck!
