This year we decided that we were going to make our tree ornaments. This is not something that my husband or I did while growing up and I have always been very partial to big trees with white and icy blue decorations and I really don’t know why. And no tinsel, I don’t like tinsel.

I have had some really beautiful crystal decorations that I got for a Christmas gift many many moons ago. They were my favorite things that went on my tree every year. Every year I lose one due to a child or a pet. I have 2 left. This year they are not going on the tree 😀 I’m grateful that my kids are getting older and can take part in this, which will hoefully be a new, tradition.
What about you or your family? Do you have old ornaments passed down to you? Do you buy new ones each year? Real tree? Artificial tree?

We tried a real tree one year but I was very unprepared and didn’t have a proper tree skirt so we ended up with tree sap on the floor that leaked through the skirt. I loved having the real tree and I would be willing to give it a try again with the proper research haha. We bought a new artificial one (Colorado Black Spruce) and child proof ornaments to get us through the next few years. I also love having my tree up for an unnatural length of time hence another reason for a fake tree. To bring the outdoors in this year we opted to make a center piece for our table.
All the ornaments were made of wood discs that my husband cut himself and the same with the base of center piece, just on a much larger scale. While the kids had fun with the smaller decorations, I really enjoyed making this center piece. My husband did a great job picking out the things to put on it and I set it all up.

Christmas is coming really fast and we still have more to make. I have a great recipe for some clay decorations (which I’m not sure if we’ll get up because our cat won’t stay out of the tree) but they will be fun to make. I also wanted to make a garland with strips of construction paper made into loops and strung together. It was a big thing when I was younger and I’m hoping the kids enjoy it as well.
Is there anything that you do in your home for the holidays that you did when you were younger?
I apologize for being so non-existent lately. I hope everyone is having a great month so far. The holidays can be a hard time for so many of us and although I love Christmas and the magic and all the love, I also have a lot that I am missing at this time of year. I know there are others out there feeling this way as well and I want you to know that you are not alone and we can get through this just like last year and the year before that.
Talk to again soon 🙂 -Ang

We had a lot of fun when our kids were growing up with all their home made decorations (some in school and some at home). We had so many, we even had to buy a 2nd smaller tree, so they could all go up. Now without kids at home, Christmas has lost a bit of its excitement, so we try to make a few new traditions to reinject excitement and there are always all the Christmas videos we can review. Happy decorating, Angie. Allan

Making decorations with your children sounds like a wonderful family moment.
I would think that the children will remember this for a lifetime!
Way to go Angie!
